How to Use Inclusive Language

The language we use shapes the workplace culture we create and whether an environment is truly welcoming to all.. Being aware of the power of our language is not about being politically correct. It is about making sure we are empowering all communities and demonstrating awareness and respect. During this session, our panelists will discuss:

  • What are some tactics for employers to practice utilizing more inclusive language?

  • Maurice is a professional with over 10+ years in stakeholder engagement, diversity & inclusion, event producing, recruiting, staffing, compensation administration, & training. Prior to Google, Wiggins was an executive consultant at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Wiggins is also the Founder of Profyle Management, a consulting and strategic partnership firm.

  • Sherika Ekpo (she/her), a native of the Washington, D.C.  Metropolitan area, joined Anaplan as the inaugural Chief  Diversity and Inclusion Officer in June 2021. In this new role,  Sherika works closely with Anaplan’s executive  leadership, human resource, legal and employee resource  groups to advance the company’s already progressive  efforts to create and maintain a corporate culture that  values the contributions of all members of its workforce.  

    Sherika has nearly 20 years of strategic human capital,  talent management and development experience. Over  the course of her career, Sherika has worked at Google,  JPMorgan Chase, General Electric, and the U.S.  Department of Homeland Security. Her contributions in  the area of diversity, equity and inclusion have been  honored with several professional and community awards.  

  • Lauren Appelbaum is the VP, Communications and Entertainment & News Media, of the disability nonprofit RespectAbility. As an individual with an acquired nonvisible disability — Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy — she works at the intersection of disability, employment, entertainment media and politics. From entertainment professionals to presidential campaigns, journalists to philanthropists, she conducts trainings on the why and how to be more inclusive and accessible to ensure the full inclusion of the 61 million people in America with disabilities. Previously, she was a digital researcher with the NBC News political unit during the 2006 midterm and 2008 presidential election cycles.

    Appelbaum is a sought-after expert and has been quoted by many national publications including Associated Press, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, IndieWire, The New York Times, Reuters, USA Today, Variety and The Washington Post.
